Description
"DARKEST DUNGEON is a gothic turn-based roguelike about what dungeon crawling actually does to the people who do it. Red Hook Studios built it around a single, brilliant premise: your heroes are not stat blocks, they are human beings, and the horror they walk into damages their minds as surely as it damages their bodies.
THE STRESS SYSTEM: Every hero carries a stress meter alongside their health. Darkness, critical hits, starvation, watching a comrade die, and the sheer psychological weight of the dungeon all raise it. Push a hero past breaking point and they develop an Affliction - they become Paranoid and refuse healing, Selfish and steal loot, Abusive and stress out the rest of your party, Hopeless and stop acting. Occasionally, rarely, a hero instead rallies and develops a Virtue, becoming briefly heroic and inspiring the whole party. That moment, when it comes, is genuinely thrilling because it is never guaranteed.
PERMANENT CONSEQUENCES: Heroes accumulate quirks - good and bad - that stick. Some become compulsive gamblers, some develop kleptomania, some acquire crippling phobias of specific dungeon features. They contract diseases. They can be cured at the Sanitarium, but treatment costs money and time, and the roster only regenerates so fast. Death is permanent. Losing a fully-levelled, well-equipped veteran three rooms from the exit is a real and recurring event, and the game is designed so that you feel it.
THE HAMLET: Between expeditions you manage a crumbling estate town - upgrading the blacksmith, guild, sanitarium, tavern and abbey, deciding which heroes get scarce resources, and choosing who to send back into the dark. Resource pressure is constant and deliberate. The game repeatedly forces you into decisions about people you have grown attached to.
COMBAT: Turn-based, four-hero party, and position is everything. Every ability works only from specific rank positions and only targets specific enemy ranks, so shuffles, pulls and stuns that scramble the line-up are as devastating as raw damage. Party composition is a genuine puzzle, drawn from a large roster of distinct hero classes - Crusader, Highwayman, Plague Doctor, Vestal, Occultist, Hellion, Leper, Grave Robber, Jester, Houndmaster and more, each with entirely different toolkits.
THE PRESENTATION: Chris Bourassa's hand-drawn art is a Mike Mignola-influenced study in heavy ink and deep shadow, and it is unmistakable. Wayne June's narration - dry, sepulchral, quotable - is one of the most celebrated performances in indie gaming and is half the reason the game's atmosphere works as well as it does.
Expect 60-80 hours for a full campaign, and considerably more for players who take on the harder difficulty settings."
Social ProofDarkest Dungeon is one of the defining indie successes of its era, holding an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam sustained across a very large review base. It won and was nominated for multiple independent games awards, and its stress-and-affliction system has been widely imitated across the genre. Wayne June's narration became a cultural touchstone in its own right, and the game's success supported a full sequel.
